Toyota Plans for 25 Million Vehicles in 2012

When Kiichiro Toyoda first travelled to the United States to learn about car production in the 1920s, we're sure he could hardly imagine that one day, his company would be celebrating the 25-millionth vehicle produced in the United States. But, this year, that's exactly what Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc (TEMA) plans on doing.
So, how'd Toyota get to 25 million? Obviously it's taken a lot of time and hard work to reach this particular milestone. But, in 2011 alone, Toyota started by expanding production at their plant in West Virginia. Manufacturing of the 6-speed automatic transmission increased, and a total number of 1,100 employees. Their plant in Alabama began producing a four-cylinder engine that resulted in 240 new jobs. And in Mississippi, the addition of the Corolla to the production line added 2,000 new jobs. And by year's end, Toyota built 1,255,635 vehicles and 1,141,466 engines.
But like we said, it's been a long road. According to Shigeki Terashi, President and COO of TEMA, "Despite a challenging year due to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan that caused limited parts availability, Toyota's team members and supplying partners were able to ramp up production ahead of schedule. This kind of commitment and customer-first spirit will set the stage for growth over the course of the year."1
So, what about this year? Goals include building the 25 millionth vehicles in North America, and begin production of the EV RAV4 in its Ontario facility. Making up the total of 25 million, Toyota models produced in North America include the Toyota Avalon, 2012 Camry and 2012 Toyota Tacoma.
